LSU Health New Orleans had a significant presence at the recently concluded American Society of Pediatric Otolaryngology meeting in Austin. Residents and medical students from the Department of Otolaryngology had a total of 10 presentations at this international conference focusing on the current advancements in the specialty of Pediatric Otolaryngology.

The presentations included Management of Neonatal Head and Neck Teratomas by Dr. Suzanne Smart (PGY 5 Resident); Effectiveness of a Structured 1 Hour Tracheostomy Teaching Session on the Knowledge and Skill of Pediatric Residents in Emergency Tracheostomy Care by Dr. Keonho Kong (PGY 1 Resident,); Impact of Supraglottoplasty on Parental Perception of Swallowing Using a 10 Point Swallowing Index by Dr. Vilija Vaitaitis ( PGY 2 , Department of Otolaryngology); Surgical Planning Using Three-Dimensional Printing for Complex Laryngotracheal Stenosis by Dr. Erica Jackson ( PGY 2, Otolaryngology); Pediatric Intratracheal Rhabdomyosarcoma Masquerading as Tracheal Granuloma by Dr. Marcus Hershey (PGY 2, Otolaryngology); Transcanal Incisionless Tympanoplasty Using Novel Biodesign Graft by Dr. Marcus Hershey ( PGY 2, Otolaryngology); Swallowing Assessment in Patients Undergoing Lingual Tonsillectomy and Epiglottopexy for Severe Sleep Apnea by Dr. Victoria Givens( PGY 3 , Otolaryngology); A Method of Securing Nasotracheal Tube During Single Stage Laryngotracheal Reconstruction by Casie James (SOM, Class of 2018); Airway and Swallowing Outcomes in Children with Congenital Vascular Rings by James Connick (SOM, Class of 2018) and Extended partial Cricotracheal Resection for Grade 4 Subglottic Stenosis presented in the Surgical Video Presentation Competition.

Dr. Sohit Paul Kanotra, Assistant professor in the Department of Pediatric Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and Director of the Pediatric Airway Program at Children’s Hospital New Orleans, mentored these projects along with Dr. Daniel Nuss, Chairman of the Department of Otolaryngology -Head and Neck Surgery, and Dr. Michael Dunham, Director of Pediatric Otolaryngology at LSU.
